A German Shepherd in New York jumped out of a moving car to chase a deer it spotted on the sidewalk.
Video footage captured by a motorist in the car behind the dog's car shows the German Shepherd observing the deer as it nibbled on grass on the sidewalk in what appears to be a residential area. Seconds later, the dog leapt out of the slow moving car, leash on neck, and started chasing the deer.
The two ran between the trees and it is not immediately clear if the German Shepherd made its way back home.
The incident reportedly took place in Rochester in upstate New York, according to SWNS. The city's Animal Services department did not immediately respond to USA TODAY's request for a comment on the incident.

Is it normal for dogs to chase deer?
It is not uncommon for dogs to chase animals such as deer or squirrels, given their inherent need for a chase. Figo Pet Insurance recommends the following to avoid a chase that could be harmful to your pet:
- Training: Teach your dog impulse control by using treats
- Recall: Teach your dog to respond to your call, rewarding them every time they respond. Use a long leash if necessary while training.
- Don't let your dog wander: The best way to keep dogs from chasing wildlife is to keep them secured on a leash when outdoors along with closing all routes of escape.
- Cater to your dog's need for chase: Dogs love a chase, so it's important to ensure that their need is fulfilled. This can be done by using balls and other toys to give them something they can pursue.
