Kid Cudi's set at Coachella ended abruptly Sunday after he jumped from the stage — and broke his foot upon landing.
Cudi, 40, who was just added to the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival's second-weekend lineup on Tuesday, played to an overflowing crowd. But late into his 40-minute set, he tried to jump down from the stage during his hit "Memories" severely injuring his foot in the process.
After carefully stepping down from one platform, he jumped and took an awkward tumble, immediately wincing as he rolled to the ground. He was later seen being escorted off by two men.
He confirmed in an X, formerly Twitter post early Monday morning that he did, in fact, break his foot.
"... Just leavin the hospital. Never broken a bone before so this is all a bit crazy," he wrote. "I wanna thank u all for ur concerns and well wishes!! I love yall man. I heard yall still ragin when I was offstage. Made me smile big."
There were still one-and-a-half songs remaining in his allotted time. The crowd was treated to a recording of his biggest hit, "Pursuit of Happiness," to close out the set, most of them not aware that Cudi had been hurt and was no longer on stage.
Coachella 2024 setlist: Here's everything Kid Cudi played during Weekend 2
Before the injury, it was a pretty epic performance as the Sahara tent was completely packed and overflowing on both sides including the new hill on the south side of the tent where fans can sit on a grassy hill to see the show. It was completely filled with people sitting and watching despite the high temperatures.
Cudi hadn't performed at Coachella since 2019 and recalled his first time in 2013 early in his set. He said when he looks back at videos of that performance, he sees a big smile on his face because that was the first day he really understood the relationship between the crowd and the artist. He then launched into "Up, Up & Away."
He had that relationship going again on Sunday, playing on a mostly bare stage with the exception of about a 20-foot statue of himself from the waist up in sort of a messiah pose.
Kid Cudi is kicking off a tour in June for his new album "Insano" and he played two songs from the new album including the live debut of the song "Blue Sky" followed by "Powerboy."
He then gave the fans what they wanted, finishing his set with the two biggest sing-along hits, "Memories" and "Pursuit of Happiness." But at some point during "Memories" he was jumping down into the area between the stage and the crowd, it's unclear what his plan was. But his leg got caught on part of the stage and as he jumped down to clear that area, he twisted his ankle when he hit the ground.
